Health And Life 2019

LIFE, HEALTH AND ILLNESS

The Health and Life training focuses on all aspects of life, health and illness. The functioning of the healthy person is related to genetic, social, biotic, behavioural and physical influences. Looking at our health from such a total view: if you also immensely fascinate, then this training is perfect for you.

In the first year of the course, you lay a broad basis for the knowledge and academic skills within the life sciences. Your field of vision reaches from molecule to society. Next, you profile yourself in the second year on the basis of your interests, skills and ambitions in the direction of biomedical, clinical or health sciences (major). In the first part of the third year you choose a minor and in the second semester, you complete the program with a Bachelor's internship in which everything comes together.

FURTHER LOOK AS A HEALTH AND LIFE SCIENTIST

Health problems today are so complex that they can only be solved by bringing together different disciplines. And that is exactly why you are looking for the right solutions for (international) health problems in Health and Life from the VU theme Human Health & Life Sciences. Because the Faculty of Science cooperates with other VU faculties, you learn to develop a multidisciplinary view. That is worth gold as soon as you start working as an expert.

BECOME A HEALTH AND LIFE SCIENTIST? COME GRADUATION
Are you well versed in science and fascinated by human health? Do you not only want to know what happens in the body when it gets sick, but do you also want to do (patient-oriented) research on this? Do you find the social side of being ill just as interesting? And last but not least: do you like to manage your own education? Then we would like to introduce you during a day of trial studying here on the VU campus at the Amsterdam Zuidas.

THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO
Complex issues
Health is determined by many factors, both within and outside our sphere of influence, both at the level of the cell and at the level of society. Because of this, health issues are often very complex. In order to find suitable solutions, it is necessary to look at this issue from different angles. As a student of Health and Life, you, therefore, study (international) health from different perspectives: from molecule to society.

Unique education

The Bachelor's degree program in Health and Life is unique in the Netherlands. The course lasts three years and can only be followed full-time from September.

From a broad knowledge base to specialization

Health and Life is a broad program in Life Sciences, in which you - from the second year onwards - can further specialize through majors (biomedical, clinical or health sciences). In order to prepare well for these majors, and to help you in your selection process, all majors return to the courses of the first year. Some first-year courses have a more biomedical, health-scientific or clinical character, others are combined in nature. In this way, you lay a broad knowledge base in the first year, and then you will specialize further.

The knowledge acquired in the Health and Life bachelor's program is briefly summarized in:
• The construction and functioning of the human body: tissues, organs, molecular and cellular processes, genetics, evolutionary biology, microbiology, immunology and physiology.
• Health, disease and society: the emergence, spread and course of diseases, diagnosis and treatment strategies, prevention and the relationship with lifestyle, psyche and socio-cultural environment.

Skills

In order to be well prepared for solving health issues, later on, it is important that you acquire skills in addition to knowledge. Within the various courses of Health and Life, you will actively get started with learning these skills. The skills learning lines that are central to Health and Life are:

1) Research method and Statistics: by studying theory and by getting started yourself, you will learn how to conduct research and how to analyze data using statistical methods.

2) Academic Skills and critical thinking: throughout your bachelor's degree you will be working on scientific reading and writing, presenting, debating and reflecting in order to train your academic skills and become a critical researcher.

3) International Science Communication: in view of the increasing internationalization of science, you will start working on this learning line with an important skill: communicating science in English.

4) Tutoring and Professional Practice (SLB): within this learning path we help you on your way with all the choices you have to make within the Health and Life program, such as the choice for your major. In addition, you will gain insight into the professional opportunities after Health and Life, and you will actively get started with the development of good study skills.
